Celebrate marriage equality by Getting Engaged!

You and your partner have been together for many years, or maybe you’ve only been dating for a few months, but you know that this is the person with whom you plan to spend the rest of your life. Why not make it legal? Of course, those of you that have been together for many years could not legally marry in the past, so, perhaps, you’ve become comfortable with the status quo.

There are good reasons to make it legal, though, especially if you’re an older couple or a young couple who plans to have children. What happens when your partner or your partner’s child is in the hospital? Are you allowed to be included in the health decisions? What happens if you plan to adopt children? If you’re not married, only one of you, or in some states, neither of you can be the legal parent. If your partner dies, can you participate in the funeral arrangements, handle all the paperwork afterwards, inherit anything, take custody of surviving children, etc? Sure, you can have power of attorney or be co-owner of your home or car, but there are still many things that will be taken over by biological relatives, if you’re not actually married.

Isn’t it time to propose to your partner? If you’ve been together for a while and don’t want a big wedding, go ahead, and have a small wedding soon. If you prefer a larger wedding with family and friends, start making plans. Planning a regular wedding with a venue, cake, flowers, music, invitations, etc, takes a while. Whatever type of wedding you want, get engaged, and set a date. This is the ideal time.

Pick a spot to propose. It could be at a Pride event or a location that’s meaningful to you both. You can keep it simple, or you can make it more special by having decorations or having friends present. You know your partner’s style, so let that be your guide. If you want to document a surprise proposal, contact your photographer or videographer well in advance. Try to find one who is LGBTQ friendly and will be comfortable shooting your proposal and engagement portraits.
